A Minute-By-Minute Recording Of The Top Twenty Selections

In a draft year that was buried in secrecy and uncertainty, the New York Islanders take a major step towards repeating their glory days of old by selecting John Tavares.

There was plenty of hype surrounding the 2009 NHL entry draft. John Tavares, Victor Hedman and Matt Duchene were the three names being floated as the potential #1 pick in 2009. Rumours of potential trades swirled about the hockey world for a week leading up to the draft – and for the first time in recent memory, the draft was drowning in doubt and speculation. From an entertainment aspect, the draft was a bust as it failed to live up to the hype.

Here’s what happened:

7:15pm – NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, along with Montreal Canadiens legends Henry Richard and Yvonne Cournoyer, welcome spectators, listeners and viewers from the podium at the Bell Centre.

7:18pm – #1 pick: The New York Islanders select C John Tavares from the London Knights of the OHL.

7:24pm – The Anaheim Ducks trade D Chris Pronger and F Ryan Dingle to the Philadelphia Flyers for D Luca Sbisa, F Joffrey Lupul and two first-round picks (2009, 2010 and a conditional pick).

7:26pm – #2 pick: The Tampa Bay Lightning select D Victor Hedman from Modo of the Swedish Elite League.

7:38pm – #3 pick: The Colorado Avalanche select F Matt Duchene from the Brampton Battalion of the OHL.

7:45pm – #4 pick: The Atlanta Thrashers select F Evander Kane from the Vancouver Giants of the WHL.

7:56pm – #5 pick: The Los Angeles Kings select F Brayden Schenn from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the.

7:59pm – The New York Islanders trade the 26th, 37th, 62nd and 92nd picks in 2009 to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 16th and 77th overall picks in 2009.

8:02pm – #6 pick: The Phoenix Coyotes select D Oliver Ekman-Larsson from Leksand (Sweden).

8:11pm – #7 pick: The Toronto Maple Leafs select F Nazem Kadri from the London Knights of the OHL.

8:18pm – #8 pick: The Dallas Stars select F Scott Glennie from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL.

8:26pm - #9 pick: The Ottawa Senators select D Jared Cowan from the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL.

8:35pm - #10 pick: The Edmonton Oilers select F Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson from Timra of the Swedish Elite League.

8:44pm - #11 pick: The Nashville Predators select D Ryan Ellis from the Windsor Spitfire of the OHL.

8:52pm – The Minnesota Wild trade the 12th pick to the New York Islanders for the 16th, 77th and 182nd picks in 2009.

8:53pm - #12 pick: The New York Islanders select D Calvin DeHaan from the Oshawa Generals of the OHL.

9:04pm - #13 pick: The Buffalo Sabres select F Zack Kassian from the Peterborough Petes of the OHL.

9:09pm - #14 pick: The Florida Panthers select D Dmitri Kulikov from the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL.

9:15pm - #15 pick: The Anaheim Ducks select F Peter Holland from the Guelph Storm of the OHL.

9:22pm - #16 pick: The Minnesota Wild select D Nick Leddy from Eden Prairie High School, Minneapolis.

9:27pm - #17 pick: The St. Louis Blues select D David Rundblad from Skelleftea of theSwedish Elite League.

9:35pm - #18 pick: The Montreal Canadiens select F Louis LeBlanc from the Omaha Lancers of the USHL.

9:44pm - #19 pick: The New York Rangers select F Chris Kreider from Andover Academy, Massachusetts.

9:51pm – The Calgary Flames trade the 20th pick to The New Jersey Devils for the 23rd and 84th picks in 2009.

9:54pm - #20 pick: The New Jersey Devils select F Jacob Josefson from Djurgarden of theSwedish Elite League.

9:57pm – The Anaheim Ducks trade the 21st pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 26th and 37th picks in 2009.
