Toronto Maple Leafs Award Winners

Could Gustavsson Join Short List Of Calder Recipients?

Not since 1966 have the Toronto Maple Leafs had the league's best rookie on their team. In 2010, 24 year old Swedish goaltender Jonas Gustavsson could change that.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the NHL’s most decorated franchises. Although struggling as of late, the Leafs are no less a celebrated team that hosts a bevy of dedicated fans not only in Toronto, but around the world.

13 Stanley Cup championships is team history sits the Leafs only behind the Montreal Canadiens’ 24 for the most by any NHL franchise.

The Leafs have employed some of the most influential hockey minds and they own a laundry list of players to dawn the blue and white, many of them earning their way into the Hall Of Fame. But yet, for their 92 year history and all the team success’, only 26 major individual awards have been won by Maple Leafs.

They are:

Toronto Maple Leafs Vezina Trophy Winners

Turk Broda - 1940–41 and 1947–48

Al Rollins - 1950–51

Harry Lumley - 1953–54

Johnny Bower - 1960–61

Terry Sawchuk and Johnny Bower - 1964–65

It’s worth noting that from 1927 – 1981, the Vezina Trophy was awarded to the goalie who’s team allowed the fewest goals over the regular season, not for the league’s best goalie as it is known today.

Toronto Maple Leafs Conn Smythe Trophy Winners

Dave Keon - 1966–67

It really is alarming to see such a short list of players win individual awards while in Toronto, it would appear that the mediocrity that has become synonymous with the Leafs is warranted.

The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t even had a player make the ‘NHL First All-Star Team’ since 1939 when Syl Apps was named as one of the best 5 players in the league that year.

Entering the 2009-2010 season, no educated fan would have guessed that this year’s crop of players and coaches would curb the current trend. But were they wrong?

With an intense off season wooing of Swedish standout Jonas Gustavsson by Leafs General Manager Brian Burke came great expectations for the 24 year old goaltender. Through 1/5 of the season, it would appear that Gustavsson has done what Burke and company would hope he would do - earn the starting position away from Vesa Toskala.

Gustavsson only has a handful of games in the NHL under his belt but has already won over a very critical Toronto fan base, and is garnering attention around the league with each start. On a team that will have to fight tooth and nail to earn goals, Gustavsson, should he continue his strong play will be imperative to the Leafs success this season.

Should Gustavsson be able to win 30 or 35 games this year, keep his save percentage above .900 and help the Leafs contend for a playoff spot, a very strong argument would have to be made to keep the first Toronto Maple Leaf since 2003 off any NHL hardware.
